I’ve said this before, but the [Led Zeppelin] da da, da na na guitar riff isn’t “The Ocean” for me, it’s “She’s Crafty.” I grew up with sample culture. I knew that da da, da na na from Licensed to Ill, not Houses of the Holy. I came up with that. That’s where I’m from, that’s my wheelhouse, man. That’s what makes me comfortable. Reference and homage and remix. If anything else, it’s the buttons you wear on your jacket. Like, “Hey is that a Watchmen pin? Let’s talk about comics.” That kind of stuff—it’s little signals, little signal flares, up in the night, little bottle rockets, little smoke signals looking for a response.
